1. What is the purpose of = this=20 FAQ?

    FAQ Objective

    This FAQ serves as a = repository=20 for information on tips, tweaks, trouble shooting methods = and=20 tools for various Microsoft applications.

    This FAQ = is=20 intended to be used as a guide. Although we make all = attempts to=20 provide valid data, for the most part they are only = suggestions.=20 You, the user, must make the final call on what may be = appropriate=20 for your particular problem.

    Can anyone submit = an entry=20 to this FAQ?

    Absolutely!

    This FAQ=20 has been created for anyone to submit their ideas. Please = note -=20 entries will be screened for accuracy and content and may = not=20 appear for some time after=20 submission.

2. General=20 Maintenance

    Some general Rules of Thumb

    Although these ideas/concepts may seem second nature to = many=20 users, more and more newcomers make mistakes that are = costing them=20 time and aggravation. This guideline of simple practices = might=20 help save headaches in the future.

    • Always close as many running applications as = possible before=20 you install any software. One way is to right click = icons that=20 are listed on the task bar (lower right is default) and = choose=20 exit/close or disable. To be extra careful, clean boot = the=20 system and then close startup application before you = install=20 anything.
    • When installing or re-installing an operating = system.=20 Disconnect all peripherals except for the keyboard, = mouse and=20 Internet connection. Having peripherals connected can = cause an=20 install to hang or fail. Once you have installed the = operating=20 system and verified it is working correctly, add each = peripheral=20 one by one, verify they are working correctly and reboot = in=20 between each peripheral installation.
    • Never install software while your virus program is = running.=20 Disable your virus program using the method above. Don't = worry,=20 when you restart it will be enabled.
    • Whether it asks you to or not, always restart your = computer=20 (start-->shutdown or start-->restart) after you = install=20 something. In other words, if you install three things, = restart=20 after each one.
    • If you do not consider yourself an intermediate or = advanced=20 user, avoid installing Beta software.=20
    • Backup your registry and anything else you may = need/want or=20 desire before installing any software or drivers. If = your=20 software supports it, set a system restore point or = image your=20 drive. If the software you are going to install is not = the=20 original CD or floppy, be wary.=20
    • Always run virus protection for general use and keep = it=20 updated. ALWAYS have it set to scan downloads and do NOT = trust=20 any attachments even from people you know. Self = propagating=20 viruses will come from people who have you in their = address=20 book, therefore, they know you and you probably know = them.
    • Keep your startup programs limited to the ones you = use.=20 Although you can use MSCONFIG to determine what is = starting up=20 at logon (and disabled using the tool), the correct = method is to=20 disable it through the program itself.=20
    • Make backups! Although you may have no problems with = anything on your computer, a hard drive crash can happen = without=20 warning. A hard drive is a mechanical device and = mechanical=20 devices break.
    • Never unplug or plug a keyboard or mouse (ps2) when = the=20 system is turned on. Some even prefer to power down for = any=20 plugging and unplugging (except the occasional USB)
    • Use a good surge protector or battery backup. It = makes no=20 sense to spend $2,000 dollars on a computer and plug it = into a=20 $3 dollar surge protector. You also need to protect your = Cable=20 or DSL connection.
    • Even if you have a surge or battery backup, shutdown = during=20 thunder and lightening storms. Why take the chance? If = you=20 really want to be safe, unplug everything connected to = power,=20 telephone and cable.=20
    • Be careful when running Windows update. Windows may = tell you=20 a driver update is needed that is older than the driver=20 installed. You may want to create a restore point or = registry=20 backup prior to downloading driver updates. Reboot after = they=20 are installed and check to make sure they are installed=20 properly. Different OS's require different measures. In = XP you=20 can choose to just "roll back the driver" Other OS's may = not be=20 as forgiving. If you're not sure what to do and your = machine is=20 working fine, don't do it. In other words, "if it ain't = broke .=20 . . "=20
    • Check for errors and defragment your hard drive. If = you are=20 not running specific software that does this, go to my = computer=20 right click your hard drive and click tools. Disable = virus=20 software before you do it!
    • Keep the vent/fan opening clean. The more airflow, = the=20 cooler the system. Cool is good. Maintain your equipment = by=20 keeping it clean. This includes monitors, keyboards, = CPU, and=20 peripherals.=20
    • Clear the cache files in your browser.If you have a=20 broadband connection, then set the maximum amount to a = lower=20 value and check for a new version EVERY visit to the = page. You=20 may want to set this amount according to your downloads. = If you=20 download very large files, you may want to set it = higher.=20
    • Clear your temp files. Do a search for *.tmp and = delete=20 everything that is more than one day old.=20
    • Keep important disks in a common place and in = good/clean=20 condition. Nothing is worse than not finding the disk = you need=20 when you need it, or finding it and it is badly = scratched.=20
    • Keep floppy disks away from cordless telephones, = cell phones=20 and any magnetic devices including your monitor!=20
    • Save work in progress as you go along. Either set = your=20 programs to autosave work after a few minutes or do a = manual=20 save. There is nothing worse than spending a few hours = working=20 on a spreadsheet or a document or any kind of file and = then have=20 a system crash right before you finish.=20
    • Be careful who you take advice from. Everyone has a = friend=20 who is a computer genius. Most of those computer = geniuses are=20 the people who keep the real computer geniuses in = business.=20
    • Use the Add/Remove programs feature in Control Panel = to=20 remove unwanted programs. Do not delete a folder with = the=20 program in it as a way of uninstalling. If you don't = know what=20 it is, DO NOT delete it. You may not even want to touch = it :-)=20
    • Some people using a Wireless connection 802.11B = (2.4GHZ) and=20 a 2.4GHZ cordless phone could experience intermittent = losses of=20 connection.=20
    • Use a registry cleaning program to keep your = registry clean.=20 Always backup it up first:-)=20
    • Make rescue disks for your antivirus (sans XP), = partition=20 programs, etc.Rescue disks can save you on many = occasions=20
    • Keep a Windows 98 or ME startup/boot disk handy.=20
    • Do not enable the guest account in WINNT, WIN2K, or = WINXP=20
    • When connected to the net, use of a firewall is very = highly=20 recommended, either hardware, software or both. Keep in = mind=20 that Internet and network problems can occur if a = firewall is=20 not configured properly or if it malfunctions.=20
    • Avoid editing work from floppy disks. Copying the = file to=20 your drive will enable you to work faster and will also = keep the=20 original copy intact if something happens.=20
    • If you install a lot of programs, organize them by = folders,=20 e.g., Games, Utilities, Security, etc. It will help you = find=20 them easier and improve ease of maintenance. If you have = the=20 knowledge, putting games, music, pictures, etc. on a = separate=20 drive from the operating system is good practice. If you = decide=20 to do it, pay close attention to how you name and use = your=20 folders. For a more advanced approach you can install = programs=20 that do no make registry entries (dlls and the like) on = a=20 separate drive or partition. This way if you have a = system crash=20 on your main drive/partition, they will still be intact = after a=20 reinstall.=20
    • Keep your CPU steady, don't move it around or shove = it into=20 place. The hard drive read heads sit a couple of microns = away=20 from the disk. A good shove can crash your drive. Also, = moving=20 your CPU often can loosen connections and cause = intermittent=20 problems.=20
    • Turn off screen savers before installing large = programs,=20 burning CDs or defragmenting. Better yet, defrag in safe = mode.=20
    • Be careful using disk compression utilities, they = can cause=20 trouble as well as take a VERY long time to uncompress.=20
    • Finally if all else fails: READ THE = MANUAL.

3.1 Customization = and=20 Performance

    How to Stop or customize the Splash Screen in W95 and = W98

    Here's a customization tip for stopping = and\or=20 changing the boot (splash) screen in W95 and W98 (courtesy = of=20 PCWorld):
    You can turn off the splash screen or exchange the = corporate=20 splash screen to get something more pleasing than a = Microsoft or=20 hardware vendor logo. Microsoft's Tweak=20 UI utility for Windows makes turning off the screen = easy.=20 Select Start, Settings, Control Panel, and double-click = Tweak UI.=20 Click the Boot tab, uncheck "Display splash screen while = booting",=20 and click OK.

    If you don't have Tweak UI, then you = edit=20 msdos.sys. Select Start, Programs, MS-DOS Prompt. In the = MS-DOS=20 window, type attrib -r -s -h c:\msdos.sys (use hyphens for = the=20 dashes and make sure to leave a space in front of each = one), and=20 then press Enter. Next, type notepad c:\msdos.sys. After = you press=20 Enter, msdos.sys will come up in Notepad. If the line = "Logo=3D1" is=20 there, change it to Logo=3D0. If it isn't there, add the = line Logo=3D0=20 just below the line that reads "[Options]". Save the file = and=20 close Notepad. In the DOS window, type attrib +r +s +h=20 c:\msdos.sys (the same as the first command, only with = plus signs=20 instead of hyphens), and press Enter. Close the window.=20

    Changing the logo is harder. In Explorer, go to = C:\.=20 Select View, Folder Options (or View, Options); on the = View tab,=20 select "Show all files", and click OK. Look for a file = called=20 logo.sys; if it's there, rename it something like = oldlogo.sys. Go=20 to the graphic program of your choice and create or load = the file=20 you want to replace the old logo with. The new file should = be a=20 .bmp image file with 256 colors and sized 640 by 400 = pixels.=20

    Resize the image to 320 by 400 (Windows' boot = process=20 stretches the file horizontally from 320 to 640). If = you're using=20 Windows' Paint, select Image, Stretch/Skew; in the Stretch = section, for Horizontal, enter 50%, and click OK. When you = save=20 the file, name it C:\logo.sys. Now, the next time you boot = up, you=20 will see the image of your choice.

    How to = add=20 Explore From Here and Open DOS Prompt Here to context=20 menus

    Extracted from a post originally = submitted by raw:

    First, open a regular file folder (C: will do = just fine).=20
    Second, click Tools, Folder Options...
    Go to the = File=20 Types tab.
    Scroll down to Folder if you want it to = appear in=20 the right-click menu of all folders (Control Panel, C:, = Scheduled=20 Tasks, My Computer...) or File Folder if you want it to = appear on=20 only the places you can store files (C:\, = C:\Windows\System,=20 C:\Program Files...). Select Folder or File Folder (see = below for=20 some suggestions) and click edit.
    Click New
    Under = Action,=20 Name it. Use the ampersand (&) to indicate what letter = should=20 be underlined and used as a keyboard shortcut. Use two = ampersands=20 (&&) to display a single ampersand.
    Under = Application=20 used to perform action, type in the command used to do = whatever=20 you want to do. Click ok, then close twice and try it out. =

    Here are some examples:
    Dos Prompt Here = (Win9x/ME, use=20 on file folder):
    Action: DOS &Prompt Here
    App = used:=20 C:\Windows\command.com /k /cd "%1"
    Explore from here = (Folder):=20
    Action: Exp&lore From Here
    App used:=20 C:\Windows\explorer.exe /root, "%1"
    EDIT: the App = used for=20 explore from here should be c:\windows\explorer.exe /e, = /root,=20 "%1"
    If you want to set Explore as your default = instead of=20 Open for folders, in file types, select Folder and click = Edit.=20 Select explore and choose Set Default. Explore will now be = bold.=20
    If you hate the file types dialog and would rather = edit the=20 registry manually, here are the keys to edit:
    File = Folder:=20 HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory\shell
    Folder:=20 HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Folder\shell
    Look at the existing = commands=20 to see how it's done.

    How to make your Windows = 9x=20 machine a Powerful PC

    This top-voted thread was = originally submitted by DelaWhere_Steve= :
    Make Your Win98/WinME Computer a "Powerful PC!
    As you=20 Win98/WinME users know, you can set the "Typical Role of = your PC"=20 in the Control Panels System applet. The usual tweak is to = set it=20 to "Network Server" for increased file-system performance. = However=20 you can add one more choice: "Powerful PC" which will give = your=20 file-system an even further boost. "Powerful PC" sets VFAT = (the=20 Virtual File Allocation Table in RAM) so that it will = remember=20 about twice as many files and folders as the "Network = Server"=20 setting. Sound like something you'd like to try? =

    Well=20 then, back up you Registry and read on:

    Close all = your=20 running programs.
    Highlight the text below and press = Ctrl+C to=20 copy it:

    REGEDIT4=20 =

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\FS = Templates\Powerful]
    @=3D"Powerful PC"=20
    "NameCache"=3Dhex:a0,0f,00,00 =
    "PathCache"=3Dhex:80,00,00,00=20

    Launch Notepad or your favorite plain text editor = and=20 paste it into a new file called PowerPC.reg. Make sure = everything=20 one the line that starts with = "[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE....\Powerful]"=20 is on one line. Also make sure that there is one carriage = return=20 after the last character in the text you paste.
    Close = your=20 text editor and find your new REG file. Right click the = file and=20 select Merge from the context menu.
    Reboot and then go = to the=20 Control Panel. Launch the System applet, click the = Performance tab=20 and then click the File System... button.
    Note the = small=20 window with the drop down menu. By default it will be set = as=20 Desktop Computer. As stated above, normally you will have = two=20 other options: Mobile or docking system and Network = server.=20
    You should now have a third alternative to the default = called=20 Powerful PC. If you check this option you may see a = significant=20 performance increase under certain circumstances. If you = don't=20 like the results simply change back to Desktop computer or = whatever your previous setting was. Each time you make a = change=20 you'll be prompted to reboot. Do so.
    For those of you = as may=20 be interested, here's an explanation of what this REG file = does:=20
    "NameCache"=3Dhex:a0,0f,00,00
    The a0,0f,00,00 = means 0FA0hex=20 (yes, it is stored backwards) or 4000 decimal. VFAT = allocates=20 memory to record the last 4000 files accessed.=20

    "PathCache"=3Dhex:80,00,00,00
    The 80,00,00,00 = means=20 0080hex or 128 decimal. VFAT allocates memory to record = the last=20 128 folders accessed. This setting will use about 80K of = memory.=20

    The Network Server setting will record the last = 2729=20 files, and 64 folders, and will use about 40K. (0AA9 hex - = A9,0A,00,00 in the registry, and 0040 hex - 40,00,00,00 in = the=20 registry)
    Enjoy! :)

    How to Exit Windows = 98/Me=20 Automatically Using a Batch File

    Originally = submitted=20 by raw:
    = How=20 to Exit Windows 98/Me Automatically Using a Batch File=20 (Q234216)
    You can use either of the following = commands in=20 a batch file to restart Windows 98/Me automatically:=20

    runonce.exe -q

    rundll32.exe=20 shell32.dll,SHExitWindowsEx n

    where n is one, or a = combination of, the following numbers:

    0 - LOGOFF=20

    1 - SHUTDOWN

    2 - REBOOT

    4 - FORCE=20

    8 - POWEROFF

    The above options can be = combined=20 into one value to achieve different results. For example, = to=20 restart Windows forcefully, without querying any running = programs,=20 use the following command line:
    rundll32.exe=20 shell32.dll,SHExitWindowsEx 6
    NOTE : Using the FORCE = option=20 can cause programs to lose data.

    Below is an = explanation=20 of each available option used with the above command line: =

    LOGOFF - Shuts down all running processes, then = logs the=20 user off.

    POWEROFF - Shuts down the system and = turns off=20 the power. The system must support the power-off feature.=20

    REBOOT - Shuts down the system and then restarts = the=20 system.

    SHUTDOWN - Shuts down the system to a = point at=20 which it is safe to turn off the power. All file buffers = have been=20 flushed to disk, and all running processes have stopped.=20

    FORCE - Forces processes to terminate. When this = flag is=20 set, Windows does not query running applications to inform = them=20 that Windows is shutting down. This can cause the = applications to=20 lose data, therefore, you should only use this flag in an=20 emergency.

    The "rundll32.exe = shell32.dll,SHExitWindowsEx=20 (n)" command mentioned above can be called from the = RunOnce=20 registry key.

    The runonce.exe -q command mentioned = above=20 restarts the computer after a 15 second delay. There are = no other=20 options when using this command line, and it cannot be = called from=20 the RunOnce registry key.

    What are some good tweaking = programs?

    Tweak UI=20 (for NT and Win2000) and Power Toys for XP are very = popular=20 utilities from Microsoft that allows easy modifications to = the=20 registry through a simple point and click interface. Links = to both=20 of these applications can be found here. =

    X-Setup is another very = popular=20 tweaking utility. It is much more powerful than TweakUI = and offers=20 a lot of the same functionality, but also expands on the = options=20 quite a bit.

    How can I Speed Up the Start Menu=20 ?

    This is an old tweak, it has been around = since=20 Windows 95, and is still alive today! If you think your = Start menu=20 could respond a little quicker try this:

    1. Start = the=20 Registry Editor
    2. Go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER \ Control = Panel \=20 Desktop \
    3. Right-click the String Value = MenuShowDelay, and=20 select Modify
    4. Change the Value data (0 is fast, 400 = is=20 default. These are all in miliseconds)
    5. When ready, = press OK=20 and close the registry editor
    6. Log off, or restart = Windows=20 for the changes to take effect

    Where is = MSCONFIG in=20 Windows 2000?

    Windows 2000 does not come with = MSCONFIG=20 installed like Win9x and WinXP does.

    Instead, a = program=20 called StartUp Control=20 Panel is able to perform most of the same tasks = MSCONFIG does.=20 The only feature it does not have is the ability to manage = system=20 services. For this, you can access Administrative Tools = within the=20 Control Panel of Windows 2000.

    Welcome to the world of ACPI. Windows 2000 will = install=20 full blown IRQ sharing if your BIOS is dated newer than = 01/01/2000=20 automatically and by default.

    The only way to = change your=20 IRQ is to remove ACPI. The only way to remove ACPI will = take an=20 afternoon.

    First, have your Windows 2000 CD and = all the=20 information about your peripheral card that you can = gather. The=20 more info you get, the less experimenting you will have to = do.=20

    Here is the process:
    1. Insert your Windows 2000 CD into your CD drive and = reboot.
    2. Make certain that your BIOS is set to boot to the = CD. (Read=20 the manual for this info)
    3. When Windows 2000 first turns the screen blue and = writes in=20 the status area, "Press F6 if you have....". Press F5 = now!=20 **Yeah thats odd, but thats the way it is.**
    4. you will be presented a screen that contains a list = of PC=20 configurations - choose Standard PC.
    5. Continue through the installation, doing a repair = install.=20 DO NOT ABORT THIS INSTALLATION! your system will not = boot if you=20 don't.
    6. Reinstall your service pack level.
    7. Right click on my computer and select Properties, = choose=20 Hardware, then choose the Device Manager. Click the plus = sign=20 next to Computer and right click on Standard PC - click=20 Properties.
    8. Click on IRQ Steering. You will see three boxes = checked.=20 FROM THE BOTTOM UP, uncheck these boxes.=20
    9. You will be prompted to reboot. Do = so...
    Now the hard=20 or easy part, I can't say.

    PCI devices today are = loaded=20 with IRQ presets. Manufacturers have agreed to use certain = IRQs=20 for their devices. For instance sound card traditionally = used IRQ=20 5. Unfortunately, Sound Blaster decided to break this = habit, my=20 current SB uses IRQ 12.

    Your problem now is the = very real=20 possibility of IRQ conflicts - depending on your setup.=20

    The most extreme manner of sorting out IRQ issues = is this:=20

    Remove all peripheral cards except for the video = card.=20 Boot Windows 2000, open Device Manager and set this card = to use=20 the desired IRQ. Shut down and readd your cards one by = one,=20 rebooting between each and setting the IRQ for each - or = just=20 accept where Windows 2000 slots them. You only care about = the=20 video card it seems.

    How = can I=20 tweak the services for NT-W2K-XP?

    A: Individual = requirements of services are different, so no one will = have or=20 need the same list of services set to Disabled or changed = to=20 Manual. Therefore, you will have to do this via trial and = error=20 based on your requirements.

    WARNING!=20
    Event Log and Remote Procedure Call (RPC) should = never=20 be changed regardless of what guides say. Most of the = services=20 are dependent on either Event Log and/or RPC so disabling = these=20 will cause almost every service to fail.

        1. Open IE making sure it is Not already maximized.

        5. Now close IE again.
      If you follow = the steps=20 exactly, the next time you open IE your windows should = open=20 maximized and also, all of your "Open New Window" = windows should=20 also open maximized (or to exactly how far you stretched = it in=20 Step 2)

      How do I launch browser windows in a = separate=20 process?

      Found at WinGuides.com. = As=20 always, backup the registry before making any = changes.
      This setting specifies whether a new process is created = for each=20 instance of Internet Explorer that you start. This can = prevent=20 one instance of Explorer from affecting other instances = if it=20 stops responding.

      Open your registry and find = the key=20 below.=20 =
      [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer= \BrowseNewProcess]=20

      Value Name: BrowseNewProcess
      Data Type: = REG_SZ=20 (String Value)
      Value Data: Yes or No

      You may = need to=20 create the key if it does not already exist. =

      Create a=20 new String value, or modify the existing value, called=20 'BrowseNewProcess' and edit the value according to the = settings=20 below.

      Exit your registry, you may need to = restart or=20 log out of Windows for the change to take effect. =

      Note:=20 Normally this is automatically enabled or disabled based = on the=20 amount of random access memory (RAM) that is installed = in the=20 computer. If the computer has less than 32 megabytes = (MBs) of=20 RAM installed, this setting is disabled. If there is 32 = MBs of=20 RAM or more installed on the computer, the setting is=20 enabled.

      Can I change the IE and OE Animated=20 Logos?

      Found at WinGuides.com. = Always=20 backup the registry before making any changes.
      When you browse the Internet using Internet Explorer or = read=20 messages using Outlook Express, a logo is displayed = indicating=20 whether activity is taking place. With this tweak you = can modify=20 which logo is shown, customize it or reset it to the = default.=20

      Use Your Own Animated Logo =
      There are=20 two bitmap files used to display the animated logo, both = can be=20 identical except for the size, one is 38 pixels wide and = the=20 other 22 pixels.

      Using an image editor, such as = MS=20 Paint, create an image similar to a roll of film, where = equal=20 sized "frames" are a stacked vertically within the one = larger=20 image. For example, a large icon, with 10 frames, would = be 38=20 pixels wide and 380 pixels high (38 pixels x 10 frames = =3D 380=20 pixels high).

      When active and the logo is = animated, the=20 top frame is shown first, then the next, an so on, until = the=20 last frame is reached and the image loops. Similarly, = when the=20 application is idle, the first frame is shown statically = until=20 further activity, that is unless an alternate = non-animated logo=20 has been defined using the technique below.

      Once = you=20 have created the icons you need to register them by = opening the=20 key [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet=20 Explorer\Toolbar] in your registry.

      Then create = two new=20 string values, or modify the existing values, named=20 'SmBrandBitmap' and 'BrandBitmap' and set their values = to equal=20 the full filename of the small (22 pixel) image and = large (38=20 pixel) image respectively.

      Use Your Own=20 Non-Animated Logo
      These images are shown = when the=20 application is idle, as with the method above there are = two=20 images one small 22 x 22 pixel and a larger 38 x 38 = pixel. To=20 activate them open the key=20 [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet = Explorer\Main]=20 and create two string values named 'SmallBitmap' and = 'BigBitmap'=20 setting the values to equal the filenames of the images. =

      Reset to the Default Logos
      To = restore=20 the default animated logo, delete the 'BrandBitmap' and=20 'SmBrandBitmap' string values found under the registry = key=20 [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet=20 Explorer\Toolbar].

      To restore the default idle = logo,=20 delete the 'SmallBitmap' and 'BigBitmap' string values = found=20 under the registry key=20 [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet = Explorer\Main].=20

      Restart Internet Explorer or Outlook Express for = the=20 change to take effect.

    I get = audio but=20 no video when I play a movie file. What's = wrong?

    The=20 problem is that you don't have the right codec. = Codec is=20 short for code/decode. MSDN defines a codec = as:=20
    A list of "instructions," known as an algorithm, = which=20 programs such as encoders and players use to compress and=20 decompress data.
